HECS 1 MLD ETP Commissioned at ONGC Oil Exploration Field
HECS has completed the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of a 1 MLD (10 Lakh LPD) Effluent Treatment Plant at the ONGC Oil Exploration Field located in Gopavaram, Andhra Pradesh. This project was executed to support ONGC’s ongoing requirement for reliable, compliant, and efficient effluent management in one of its active exploration zones. The system is engineered as an above-ground FRP-based ETP, ensuring durability, corrosion resistance, and long-term operational stability under demanding field conditions.
The newly established ETP was inaugurated by Shri Santanu Das, ED Assistant Manager, in the presence of Shri Jayant Kumar, GGM (P) – Surface Manager, marking a significant step toward improved wastewater treatment and compliance at the site.
Project Scope & Objective
Oil exploration facilities generate complex effluent containing suspended solids, hydrocarbons, and process waste. ONGC needed a robust treatment system that could manage this load continuously while meeting environmental discharge standards. The goal was to establish a stable system capable of handling large volumes of wastewater every day, supporting uninterrupted on-site activity and maintaining strict regulatory compliance.
HECS was entrusted with delivering a turnkey solution, including engineering, fabrication, installation of treatment units, interconnecting piping, instrumentation, and commissioning.
Key Project Details
- Client: ONGC
- Capacity: 1 MLD Effluent Treatment Plant
- Installation Type: Above Ground
- ETP Model: FRP ETP
- Location: Gopavaram, Andhra Pradesh
- Source of Inlet: Effluent generated from oil exploration processes
- Project Duration: 6 Months
Treatment System & Components
The plant design integrates multiple FRP tanks and treatment stages that handle variations in flow and pollutant load efficiently. The major components include:
- FRP Collection Tank – An Initial receiving tank that collects the raw effluent before processing.
- Equalisation Tank – Balances fluctuations in effluent quality and quantity, ensuring uniform feed to downstream units.
- Sludge Holding Tank – Dedicated to safe storage and management of settled sludge.
- Treated Water Tank – Stores the final treated output before disposal.
The FRP construction significantly reduces maintenance requirements and ensures long-term performance even under aggressive effluent conditions.
Treated Water Usage
After undergoing the complete treatment cycle, the processed water is safely discharged into the ground as per regulatory norms. The system ensures that the final water meets environmental quality requirements, supporting ONGC’s sustainability efforts and minimising ecological impact around the exploration field.
Execution & Outcome
The entire project was completed within a span of six months, including fabrication, site installation, system integration, testing, and commissioning. The plant now provides ONGC with:
- Consistent effluent treatment performance
- Enhanced environmental compliance
- Lower operational challenges due to automation-ready FRP design
- Reduced dependence on manual intervention
- Stable treated water quality is suitable for safe ground discharge
Project Impact
This 1 MLD ETP stands as a strong example of HECS’s ability to handle large-volume industrial wastewater treatment projects for critical sectors such as oil and gas. The modern FRP-based system ensures durability, optimised performance, and efficient handling of challenging effluent loads associated with exploration activities.
